With its spectacularly ornate Chicago-gothic style, The Capitol is one of Melbourne’s most beloved architectural icons. With RMIT’s state-of-the-art refurbishment it has been transformed into a contemporary centre for the cultural and education industries, with a variety of flexible spaces available to innovate and enjoy.

Box Office

This Box Office is open one (1) hour before the first screening until fifteen (15) minutes after the final screening commences. All MIFF box offices are cashless so only EFTPOS and credit card are accepted. Cash is not accepted.

The Box Office is located in the foyer, accessible via a set of stairs from the Swanston St entrance or via the lift in the Capitol Arcade to Level 1.


Transport Information

Public Transport  

  • The Capitol Theatre is located in close vicinity to Flinders Street Train Station and is serviced by both Swanston Street and Collins Street trams.  Go to ptv.vic.gov.au for public transport information. 
  • Level access tram stops nearby are Stop 13 Flinders Street Station, Stop 11 Collins Street (Swanston St/Collins St) for trams 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72, Stop 6 Swanston Street for trams 86 and 96

 

Parking  

  • Secure Parking is proud to be a partner of the Melbourne International Film Festival. They are offering all MIFF filmgoers discounted parking at selected car parks.   • There are designated on-street Accessible Parking Bays available at the following locations: 

-Flinders St between Elizabeth St and Swanston St

Accessibility Information

Venue Access    

  • There are two entrances into The Capitol Arcade, one from Swanston Street, the other from Little Collins through Carson Place, onto Howie Place heading towards Swanston Street.
  • From the Capitol Arcade there is a staircase that leads up towards the Level 1 Capitol Foyer.
  • For step-free/wheelchair access, enter The Capitol Arcade from Swanston Street or Howie Place. Between the Jeweller and the Dry Cleaner, there is a lift. Take the lift to The Capitol’s Level 1 Foyer level.  
  • For step-free/wheelchair access to the Level 2 Salon from the foyer, take the ramp to the additional internal lift and take the lift to Level 2.

Cinema Seating 

  • To enter the front of cinema, there is a large central staircase from the foyer level. There are stairs leading to the front, middle and rear sections of the cinema.  
  • There is an additional entrance from the Salon level, up a set of internal stairs to the right of the foyer. Entry from the Salon is into the centre of the cinema. 
  • For step-free/wheelchair accessible seating, take the internal lift from the Foyer to the Level 2 Salon. There are two automatic doors on either side of the Salon to access the cinema. There are four accessible spaces with companion seats in the centre of the cinema – two on the left and two on the right. Four additional spaces with companion seats are accessible from the Foyer level and are positioned at the front of the cinema.  
  • All seats are fabric except for the centre section, Rows J-P7 – 20, which are leather and have a small stow table.

Access Services

  • Hearing Loop: The Capitol is equipped with a hearing loop throughout the venue. The user requires a neck loop that acts as a wireless connection to a personal hearing aid device equipped with a "T" coil
  • Assistive Listening: The Capitol will also have Assistive Listening units available for collection at the MIFF Box Office. Assistive Listening units will only be available for use at specific film screenings.
  • Please see How to Book Your Ticket section to book a Hearing Loop or Assistive Listening device. You will be required to leave photo ID when borrowing a device. Please approach a MIFF FOH staff member for assistance when you arrive at the venue. 

 

Bathrooms

 

  • There are bathrooms available on the Foyer and upper Salon foyer level.  
  • An accessible gender-neutral bathroom is located on the Foyer level.
