MIFF’s popular Critical Condition series returns with an exclusive MIFF Members screening of visionary German auteur Werner Schroeter’s Deux (2002), a ravishing, rarely seen masterpiece of high-camp surrealism starring Isabelle Huppert in a daring dual performance.
In this double dose of cinema’s reigning diva, La Huppert plays identical twins separated at birth who suddenly become aware of each other, an existential showdown that leads to one of the strangest and most haunting climaxes you’ll ever see. Electrified by an operatic performance from his star and muse, Schroeter creates a hallucinatory experience bursting with all the melodrama, intensity and passion that made him one of the New German Cinema’s greatest artists.
Launched at MIFF 2023 to showcase the festival’s prestigious Critics Campus program, Critical Condition is a retrospective screening series in which visiting guest critics present the films they love – and love to champion – to an audience. The inaugural edition focused on films that were historically maligned, overlooked or critically divisive, while last year’s series revolved around the theme of nostalgia. Critical Condition returns to MIFF in 2026 with an all-new theme and an exciting line-up of international guest speakers.
